Industry Tips

Carpet Cleaning
Routine carpet maintenance affects not just the general appearance of your home but also the overall quality of indoor air. You can improve appearance and reduce health problems by placing entry mats to collect particles and moisture before entering the carpeted area. Routine vacuuming is the most important step in carpet cleaning; cleaning frequency may vary depending on the amount of traffic that the carpeting carries,
the nature of the structure, and weather conditions.

You may wish to turn the problem of carpet cleaning over to a carpet-cleaning service. Before paying for professional cleaning, make sure that your carpet is worth the expense. The company can clean your carpet, but it can not resurrect it. In selecting a service, get two or three estimates as you would with any major consumer purchase. Determine how cleaning specials based on a specific number of rooms apply to your individual
situation. Find out whether halls and closets are considered part of a room. Inquire about the training and experience that company employees have; training periods and experience required may vary from company to company. Request information about the solvents and the equipment that the service uses to be sure that
your carpet can withstand the cleaning process. Check out the company's refund and damage policies. Get everything in writing and consult the BBB before signing any agreement.

Once you have selected a company, ask the company to test the cleaning method on an unseen section of the carpet. Identify the source of stains when possible so that the company can use special stain removers. Be sure that you understand any instructions you are given, and ask when furniture can be placed back on the carpet.

Air Duct Cleaning/ Duct Cleaning
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems have been shown to act as a collection source for a variety of contaminates, such as mold, fungi, bacteria and very small particles of dust, that have the potential to affect health. Research by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has demonstrated that HVAC system cleaning may allow systems to run more efficiently by removing debris from sensitive mechanical components. Consumers should be aware of the air duct cleaning companies that make claims about the health benefits of duct cleaning. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has found no such proof.

Consumers should be aware that some air duct cleaning services will offer other services such as carpet cleaning or the elimination of mold in the house. If the consumer does not agree to the additional service, the company may only give the ducts a cursory cleaning before moving on to the next house.

Before you decide that your air ducts need to be cleaned, remove air vents and shine a flashlight into the ductwork. Have your ducts cleaned only if they contain visible mold buildup or have debris coming out of air vents. After the ducts have been cleaned, insist on a thorough visual inspection. All components of the HVAC system should be free from visible dust and debris.

Before servicing you may wish to contact The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) a non-profit association that provides information on reliable air duct cleaning companies. NADCA provides pre- and post- cleaning checklists to insure that the total system cleaning is performed. For more information visit www.nadca.com or call (202)737-2926.
