HIT-AND-RUN ACCIDENTS CAN BE COSTLY

8/25/2008

Fort Worth, TX – According to statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) one out of every eight accidents nationwide involves a hit-and-run. Eighty percent of these hit-and-run accidents result in vehicle damage only. Thus the victim’s greatest expenses usually are for repairs and a replacement rental car. Many drivers do not understand the consequences of being a victim of a hit-and-run accident where the other driver is not identified. Not being able to identify the other driver is the same as being involved in an accident with an uninsured driver. Uninsured-motorist coverage pays for damages and injuries caused by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver. Not all states require uninsured-motorist coverage. Even in those states where it is required, auto insurance companies may not automatically cover the cost of a temporary replacement rental car, even if a hit-and-run accident is involved. Typically, cars are in the repair shop for about two weeks, resulting in rental charges to the victim of several hundred dollars.

The BBB encourages consumers to review their auto insurance annually to make sure that they have adequate coverage. Consumers need to have a thorough knowledge of the provisions of their policies in order to avoid any unpleasant surprises that may develop when an accident happens. Don’t assume that you will automatically be covered in all cases.
